We did it! We Stuffed the Bus! August-26-2010

A very special thank you to Forsyth County residents, community organizations and local businesses who helped us "Stuff the Bus" with school supplies for children in need for the 2010-2011 school year! Because of your generousity, over 7,000 items were collected to help prepare our students for another school year.

With the downturn in the economy, it is much more difficult for families to provide their children with the most basic school supplies needed to be successful.  Your donations have enabled these children to be prepared and ready to learn this year. Approximately 700 children will benefit from these supplies through The Place of Forsyth County and the Forsyth County School System.

A BIG Thanks to the following:

Forsyth County Schools for their buses, drivers and transportation support

Walmart for allowing us to park our buses at their stores

Walmart at 1500 Marketplace Blvd, Cumming

Walmart at 5455 Atlanta Highway, Alpharetta

Advanced Disposal for providing collection boxes to local businesses

The Georgia Fresh Start program is an initiative that will provide a one-time crisis assistance payment for qualified families to pay past-due utilities and/or shelter expenses. Led by the Department of Human Services (DHS) and United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, the program will distribute a maximum payment per family of up to $3,000.

The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, resident of the state of Georgia, caretaker or non-custodial parent of a minor dependent child living in the home, and have an income at or below 300 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. For more information about eligibility, click here to access requirements.

Families in metro Atlanta counties may call 2-1-1 for a listing of participating agencies. United Way will review and approve eligibility, and disburse payment to vendors according to DHS Fresh Start program guidelines. For areas with access to 2-1-1, please do not call your local United Way office. Contact 2-1-1 for a listing of service providers in your area.

The details of the Fresh Start program and its infrastructure are still being finalized across the state. At this time, participating counties and agencies are screening applicants for eligibility. The Fresh Start program will roll out in additional counties on June 14 and 21, and will be available throughout the state by the end of June.
